Colombian coffee production falls to 11.08 million bags in 2022, the lowest in nine years

The Colombian coffee productionthe world’s leading supplier of washed arabica, fell 12% in 2022 to 11.08 million 60-kilo bags, the lowest since 2013 and its third consecutive annual drop due to persistent rains, the National Federation of Coffee Growers reported on Wednesday. .

Meanwhile, Colombian coffee exports totaled 11.4 million bags last year, 8% below the 12.4 million bags in 2021.

In 2021, Colombian coffee production closed at 12.5 million bags. The country did not register a harvest so low since 2013, when it reached 10.88 million bags.

“This figure is the result of excess rainfall due to a prolonged La Niña phenomenon in the last two and a half years,” the federation said in a statement.

In December, Colombian coffee production reached 981,000 bags, 29% less compared to the same month in 2021 when it reached 1.38 million bags.

In the last month of last year, Colombian coffee exports were down 12% to 1.03 million bags from 1.16 million bags in December 2021.

Colombia, known for its smooth, high-quality coffees, has the capacity to produce around 14 million bags annually.

Between 2009 and 2012, the South American country —the world’s third largest coffee producer after Brazil and Vietnam— failed to meet its production goal due to heavy rains and a drop in the harvest due to a coffee plantation renovation program.

The South American country has 840,000 hectares cultivated with coffee plantations and some 500,000 families depend on this activity.
