(Trends Wide) — US President Joe Biden will announce Thursday that he will expand a program to accept up to 30,000 migrants a month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, along with a plan to expel as many migrants as possible from those countries who evade the US laws, while his government faces a wave of migrants at the southern border.
The White House will also unveil plans for Biden to visit the southern US border on Sunday, stopping in El Paso, Texas, to meet with local officials and address border security issues. It is his first stop at the border since he took office.
In remarks from the White House on Thursday, Biden will also renew calls for Congress to pass immigration reform, arguing that his powers to address a growing crisis are limited and that new laws are needed.
