Once the operations of the new Mexicana de Aviación start, Michoacán through this company seeks to reactivate commercial flights from Lázaro Cárdenas to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla announced.
After the start of 2023 and the presentation of objectives for this year, the state president explained that since 2022 he began a plan to boost the air competitiveness of the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas and thus turn its airport into one of the most important in the Pacific and the western region of the country.
This year a new opportunity was opened to consolidate the project, since the federal government’s decision to acquire the assets of the Mexicana de Aviación brand was recently announced to be operated by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena ).
This strategy would be added to the objective of recovering the air connection of Lázaro Cárdenas with other economic locations in the country, as well as promoting the greatest attraction of investments for the generation of jobs and improvement of productivity in the region”, he assured this weekend. .
He pointed out that within the framework of the start of operations of the new Sedena airline, work will begin to open an agreement and thus generate routes, where the initial priority will be to communicate with AIFA.
“The opportunity of said agreement represents strengthening mobility and further boosting the state economy,” he stressed.
Operations
Since the end of October last year, it was announced that the National Port System Administration (Asipona) will take over the operations of the Lázaro Cárdenas National Airport in order to trigger commercial flights and logistics cargo.
For this, a loan was made that will last for a period of 25 years and an investment of 120 million pesos was immediately contemplated.
The resources seek to improve the radar systems required by the airlines, as well as improve the runways, establish lighting systems and guarantee 100 percent airport security.
According to Bedolla, one of the points that was taken into account for this change of administration is that currently the state government does not have the financial capacity to achieve the conversion of the new commercial and logistical airport needs of Lázaro Cárdenas.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation granted the state government, through the local Ministry of Communications and Public Works and its Michoacán Airport Administration Department, the authorization to operate the Lázaro Cárdenas National Airport.
Before the loan agreement with Asipona, the airport had only operated for commercial and private flights; it was never enabled as an air cargo terminal.
