Sheinbaum announces that 11 people are detained for the attack on Ciro Gómez Leyva

Eleven people were arrested for attacking the journalist Ciro Gomez Leyvaone of the most renowned radio and television news presenters in Mexico, who was unharmed, the capital authorities reported this Wednesday.

“11 people were arrested related to the attack on journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva, perpetrated on December 15, 2022,” the head of the Government of Mexico City reported at a press conference. Claudia Sheinbaum.

“These 11 alleged perpetrators are linked to the material authorship of the events,” he added. Sheinbaum explained that investigations continue to clarify the reasons for the attack.

The Secretary of Public Security of the CDMX, Omar García Harfuchsaid that the detainees belong to a criminal cell that operates in Mexico City and the neighboring State of Mexico.

Gómez Leyva denounced on the night of December 15 that two people on a motorcycle shot at him in the streets of the capital with the intention of assassinating him. He added that the armor of his truck saved him and shared on Twitter images of the bullet impacts on the windshield, on one of the windows and on the body of his vehicle.

I had not received any threats. As far as I know, I don’t have any personal problems with anyone,” he said on his radio show the morning after the attack.

The driver of Grupo Fórmula, also known for his criticism of the president’s government Andres Manuel Lopez Obradoris a frequent target of taunts from the president during his usual morning conference.

Days before the attack, López Obrador sarcastically said that listening to the radio program of Gómez Leyva and other journalists opposed to his management “is even harmful to health.”

The attack on Gómez Leyva occurred during one of the deadliest years for reporters in Mexico, with 13 of them killed in 2022, according to government data.

The country is considered one of the most dangerous in the world to practice the profession, according to the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Since 2000, more than 150 journalists have been assassinated in Mexico, according to an RSF count. These crimes, for the most part, remain unpunished.
