a republican lawyer Mike Pence found documents marked as classified at the home of the former vice president of the United States last week and turned them over to the FBI, a congressman said Tuesday.
Pence “had briefed us today on classified documents found at his home in Indiana,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican, said in a statement.
He added that Pence, potential presidential candidate for 2024 agrees to “fully cooperate” with any congressional investigation.
The discovery unites Pence with the former president Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, after documents with classified marks were found at their residences.
Jacob said in the letter dated Jan. 18 that “out of an abundance of caution” Pence had retained outside counsel to review records stored at his home following reports of materials found at Biden’s residence.
The attorney identified a small number of documents that could potentially contain sensitive or classified information embedded in the records,” Jacob wrote in the letter.
“Vice President Pence immediately secured those documents in a locked safe pending further instructions on the proper handling of the National Archives,” it said. Pence’s attorney did not review the contents of the documents once they were determined to be marked classified, the letter said.
In another letter dated January 22, Jacob said the Justice Department “skipped standard procedures and requested direct possession” of the documents at Pence’s residence.
Both Biden, whose documents date from his time as vice president, and Trump, who resisted handing them over, prompting an FBI raid, face Justice Department investigations for mishandling classified material.
