Quintana Roo maintains its leadership in cruise arrivals in its main ports Cozumel and Mahahual: SICT

Chetumal.- Quintana Roo maintains its tourism leadership worldwide thanks to its natural beauties and also being preferred by cruise ship tourists as 4.1 million arrive in Cozumel and Mahahual aboard 1,576 ocean liners. In addition, the island was awarded as one of the best natural destinations in the world according to Tripadvisor.

According to figures released by the Directorate of Ports of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), they indicate that at the national level in the 28 ports they registered a movement of 6.6 million tourists aboard 2 thousand 666 cruise ships.

The foregoing represents that of this total, 62.1% was received in the ports of Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mahahual, which represents 4.1 million visitors and who arrived in 1,576 ocean liners.

Prior to the start of the pandemic in 2019, Cozumel and Mahahual received 6.1 million tourists between both ports, which represents 68.5 percent.

Regarding the figures according to the SICT for the year 2022, Cozumel received 2.9 million cruise passengers, which represents 64.4 percent compared to the 4.5 million visitors captured in 2019; while Mahahual, registers a good recovery by capturing 1.2 million in the year 2022, which means 75% compared to the 1.6 million that arrived prior to the health contingency due to the coronavirus (Covid-19).

Likewise, it is expected that by this year 2023 the ports of Cozumel and Mahahual will recover their levels of cruise arrivals with a greater number of passengers due to the lifting of pandemic alerts in some countries.

It should be noted that Cozumel was awarded this year 2023 as one of the best natural destinations in the world according to Tripadvisor.

In the Travelers’ Choice Awards 2023 “Best of the Best” considers the island as one of the best natural destinations for its paradisiacal beaches, as well as one of the best places in the world for diving due to its coral reefs, in addition to highlighting its biodiversity.
