(Trends Wide Spanish) — With laughter and without a clear answer: this is how the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, reacted this Tuesday to a question about his political future after Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, announced that he would seek the Republican candidacy for the presidency of United States in 2024.
During a press conference in Jacksonville, DeSantis was asked: “Nikki Haley announced her presidential candidacy today, do you plan to do the same?”
“You’re curious, aren’t you?” DeSantis responded.
The governor continued to smile as the crowd applauded, then gave the floor to another reporter.
According to a group of Trends Wide analysts, DeSantis is not expected to run for the Republican presidential nomination until state lawmakers finalize their agenda in May of this year.
For her part, Haley, who served as the United States ambassador to the United Nations in the Trump government, made official this Tuesday in a video that she intends to run for the presidency in 2024 for the Republican Party. She thus becomes the first major rival to challenge former President Donald Trump for that candidacy.
During her announcement, Haley highlighted her political experience as a two-time governor-elect and her leadership in South Carolina. Haley also drew on her experience in foreign policy, referring to her time as ambassador to the UN, saying that she has “seen evil”.
“Some see our past as evidence that America’s founding principles are wrong. They say the promise of freedom is made up. Some think our ideas are not just wrong, but racist and evil. Nothing could be further from the truth. Haley said.
“I have seen evil. In China they commit genocide. In Iran they kill their own people for defying the government,” he added in the video.
