One month after the awards are granted Oscarfor which it already has 9 nominations, Berger’s film with 14, had become the most nominated foreign language film in the history of the BAFTA in 76 years.
For its part, the tape “Pinocchio”by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, won the award with the BAFTA to best animated film.
In the best actress category, Australian-American Cate Blanchett won for her role as the relentless bandleader in “Tar.”
The 53-year-old actress beat actresses Viola Davis, Danielle Deadwyler, Ana De Armas, Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh.
American Austin Butler won the best actor award for his role in “Elvis” about the American rock’n roll legend.
The 31-year-old actor won against actors Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Daryl McCormack, Paul Mescal and Bill Nighy.
“The Banshees of Inisherin,” directed by Martin McDonagh, garnered best supporting actor and actress awards for Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon, respectively, and best British film.
The novel “All Quiet at the Front”, published in 1929recounts the experiences of a teenage German soldier during World War I.
Translated into more than 60 languages and with more than 50 million copies sold worldwide, it is one of the most influential examples of anti-militarist literature.
A year after its publication, a film adaptation by Lewis Milestone was released in the United States, winning the Oscars for best picture and best director.
But its subversive message led to the work being banned in Germany and the Nazis including it in the 1933 book burning.
“My film stands apart from American or British (war) films made from the point of view of the victors,” Berger told AFP in September.
“In Germany there is this feeling of shame, mourning and guilt. It was important for me to present this perspective,” he added.
