Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, product architect and majority shareholder, hosted Investor Day yesterday, March 1, at the company’s gigafactory and corporate headquarters in Austin, Texas.

At the event, he presented his Master Plan 3 and the strategy he has for his company to grow in an increasingly competitive industry such as electric cars.

According to some Tesla and auto industry journalists, Musk talked a lot about his vision and the shift to sustainable energy sources, but he didn’t give many details about how his company will help make that vision a reality.

He said, among many other things, that “There is a clear path to a sustainable energy Earth. It does not require destroying natural habitats. It doesn’t require us to be frugal and stop using electricity and get cold or anything… In fact, we could support a much larger civilization on Earth, much more than 8 billion humans could sustainably live on Earth.”

One of the executives said that Tesla’s goal is to make 20 million electric vehicles by 2030, which is a very ambitious goal considering that last year there were 1.31 million.

To achieve it, Tesla has built and will build gigantic factories that Musk himself calls gigafactories. One of them will be the one that will be established in the municipality of Santa Catarina, which is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Monterrey, Nuevo León.

According to the Undersecretary of Foreign Relations, Martha Delgado, it will be the largest electric vehicle factory in the world and the investment will be about 5,000 million dollars, an amount that according to some analysts could reach 10,000 million.

A gigafactory is a gigantic factory that Musk says represents “1 billion” factories. He himself coined the term in 2013 when explaining the type of factory needed to produce the Model 3. For Musk, the factory itself is a product because “Tesla is very much focused on designing the machine that makes the machine, turning the factory into a product”. Doing so increases the production capacity and quality of the company’s products.

Today Tesla already has four gigafactories in Sparks, Nevada, near Reno, in Buffalo, New York, in Shanghai, China, in Berlin, Germany, and in Austin, Texas. It also has a non-gig factory in Fremont, California.

The five plants have the capacity to produce almost two million vehicles a year in addition to batteries, energy storage products, solar energy products.

According to what has transpired, the Santa Catarina gigafactory will be capable of producing just over a million vehicles each year, which will help increase production by 50 percent.

To reach the goal of producing 20 million vehicles within just seven years, Tesla is looking at building gigafactories in the UK, India and Japan or South Korea.

Founded in 2003, very few believed that Tesla was going to stand for anything big. In 2009, it had barely delivered 147 units of its already discontinued Roadster.

Today, everything suggests that it will achieve its goal of 20 million in 2030.
