Commercial sector strategy towards 2023

The corporate reports at the end of 2022 sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) were recently completed, in which, despite having anticipated a certain slowdown in consumption, it was favorable to observe good growth in sales of the main commercial chains, which was a reflection of the resilience that consumers maintain.

Additionally, the first months of 2023 continue with this trend and consumption continues to be strong and thus sales maintain favorable growth accompanied by higher levels of profitability.

Companies take advantage of these days to have meetings with the community of analysts and investors to comment on their results and publicize their perspectives for this year and their strategic plan for the following ones.

During this week, we had the opportunity to attend the Analysts Day for Walmart México, Genomma Lab and Liverpool.

These are three companies related to each other and with the common denominator of having a customer-based approach.

The three stations seek to improve their profitability through more productive processes with high investments in technology.

In this area, Genomma Lab stands out, with the start-up of its Manufacturing Plant where it jointly manufactures its personal care and health products, as well as a Distribution Center.

For their part, Walmart and Liverpool stand out for their focus on strengthening omnichannel, having as a strength the geographical position of their physical stores, which are minutes away from the majority of the population, and operating them in conjunction with their online sales, which it allows them to have a very efficient leadership position.

In particular, Walmart differentiates itself from the competition with its policy of always low prices, with which it continues to gain market share and with a focus on perishables that results in a high traffic generator.

For this year, the self-service store chain will invest 27,000 million pesos, of which 30% will be allocated to store openings and almost half to remodeling, in line with its focus on strengthening its leadership position in physical stores and omnichannel.

Liverpool, for its part, maintains a strategy focused on strengthening customer loyalty through its rewards programs.

Additionally, it will focus on strengthening its Marketplace, which can be accessed through the Liverpool and Suburbia App, where you can find an extended catalog of both its stores and all its vendors.

Among the new projects for this year is becoming the largest distributor of electric vehicles in Mexico with the BYD car brand, a brand based in China. The project will start with two distributors in Mexico and will offer after-sales service in their agencies.

Additionally, it hopes to offer loans for the purchase of cars and motorcycles as well as loans to small businesses that are part of its sellers in its Marketplace.
