(Trends Wide) — Two HH60 Blackhawk helicopters from the 101st Airborne Division crashed in Trigg County, Kentucky, around 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a Fort Campbell statement.
The statement posted on the base’s Facebook page reads: “Crew members were flying two HH60 Blackhawk helicopters during a routine training mission when the incident occurred. The status of the crew members is unknown at this time. Command is currently focused on serving service members and their families. More information will be posted as it becomes available. The incident is under investigation.”
Kentucky State Police (KSP) are assisting authorities at Fort Campbell in Trigg County after an “aircraft incident” in a rural area near Lancaster Road and Highway 272, according to the spokeswoman. Kentucky State Police Station 1, Sarah Burgess.
Burgess says State Police were contacted around 10:15 p.m. local time. She told Trends Wide that there are “numerous agencies for assistance.” Burgess describes the area as a field and wooded area. “We’re a little spread out,” Burgess said. She says there are no residential areas affected by the incident.
Asked by Trends Wide if he expects the scene to last all night, Burgess said: “I would venture to say [que sí]”.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said fatalities are expected in this helicopter crash.
“We have some difficult news out of Fort Campbell, with first reports of a helicopter crash and fatalities expected,” the governor tweeted early Thursday morning. Details are limited at this time.
Beshear said the state emergency management agency along with local officials are responding to the scene. “Please pray for all those affected,” Beshear said.
Trigg County is located one hour from Paducah, Kentucky.
