(CNN) — Jeremy Renner sat down with Diane Sawyer for her first interview since her snowplow accident on New Year’s Day.
The Marvel star was the subject of “Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph,” which details the accident. at his Nevada home and Renner’s recovery.

saved his nephew
It was reported that Renner tried to save his adult nephew, Alex, when the accident occurred and the actor shared during the interview exactly what happened.
According to Renner, the two towed a vehicle out of the snow using the snowplow when it began to slide on the ice.
Concerned for his nephew’s safety, Renner took his foot off the plow to look at Alex and fell out of the cab. As he had forgotten to apply the parking brake, the actor was dragged under the moving plow, which weighs more than 6,300 kilos.
“You shouldn’t be out of the vehicle while you’re operating them, you know what I mean,” Renner recounted. “It’s like driving a car with one foot out of the car.”
Noting that the accident was “my mistake and I paid for it,” the “Hawkeye” star said he yelled, “Not today, damn it!” while being sucked into the plow.
Despite the accident that left him seriously injured, Renner has no regrets.
“Yes, I would do it again because it was going directly to my nephew,” he said.
Devastation
Renner’s injuries included eight broken ribs in 14 places, a broken eye socket, a broken knee, a collapsed lung and his liver punctured by a rib.
Neighbors Rich Kovach and Barb Fletcher helped Renner’s nephew after the accident. Both talked about the trauma during the interview.
“It was a horrible sound to hear someone, literally watch someone die in front of you,” Fletcher said. “You feel so helpless.”
Kovach said there was a large amount of blood involved in the accident and “when I looked at his head, it seemed to me that it was completely open.”
Fletcher said he believes Renner may have died at some point.
“I really feel like he passed away for a couple of seconds,” he commented. “I really believed it.”
Recovery
Renner was eventually airlifted to a hospital in Reno, Nevada.
His doctors believe that the fact that Renner was in good shape before the accident helped him both in his survival and in his recovery, but it was very difficult.
So much so that Renner said he made plans for the end of his life.
“I write notes on my phone…last words for my family,” he told Sawyer. “Don’t let me live on tubes in a machine, if my existence is going to be on drugs and painkillers, let me go now.”
Now, his condition has improved to the point where he can walk with a cane, and the actor is grateful for his survival.
Now, when he looks in the mirror, Renner says, “I see a lucky man.”
