The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported that during the fourth quarter of 2022 the tourism GDP it grew, in seasonally adjusted figures, 1.3% compared to the previous quarter and 7.4% compared to the same period of 2021.
In said period, domestic tourism consumption increased by 1.8% and 9.1%, respectively, where the receptive segment (international tourists) showed a drop of 0.6% in relation to the previous quarter (July-September 2022), although the 1.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.
In both cases (tourism GDP and internal tourist consumption), these were the figures with the lowest rise in the last three quarters of 2022, with which a stabilization begins to be observed.
Even the Center for Research and Tourism Competitiveness (Cicotto) Anáhuac mentioned in an infographic that “tourist activity is practically recovered”, in relation to pre-pandemic levels.
After the publication of the figures, the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, who is on a working tour of Tabasco and Cancun, released them on his Twitter account as a sign of the “good behavior” that the sector has had.
In addition, he accompanied them with graphs in which the speedy recovery is observed after the biggest bump in history that occurred in the second quarter of 2022, due to the start of Covid-19 in Mexico.
* Low receptive consumption
According to INEGI data, the tourism GDP of services (accommodation, transportation, restaurants…) grew at a quarterly rate of 1.9% and that of goods (handicrafts, for example) decreased by 2.7%, between October and December 2021. , while at the annual rate they increased by 8.9% and 0.7 percent.
For its part, internal domestic tourism consumption (domestic tourists) grew by 2.5 and 11%, compared to the previous quarter and the same quarter of 2021, which reiterated that the engine of recovery was the domestic market.
Regarding the quarterly fall of 0.6% in incoming consumption, the need to increase the promotion of international destinations abroad is reflected to make a country with a greater number of tourists and with greater consumption.
Based on the figures reported by the institute, Cicotur estimates that tourism GDP grew 14.4% last year compared to 2021, but it is still 1.4% below 2019, with all tourism going.
