(Trends Wide) — Dallas police suspect a man shot and killed his girlfriend after she reportedly went to another state to get an abortion.
Police officers were called to a parking lot Wednesday after 26-year-old Gabriella Gonzalez was killed, according to a Dallas County warrant.
Surveillance video shows Harold Lavance Thompson walking with her just before the shooting. He tried to strangle Gonzalez, but she got away, police say.
Thompson then pulled out a gun and shot Gonzalez in the head, the warrant says. He fired several more shots at her when she was on the ground before fleeing, according to court documents. Several witnesses, including Gonzalez’s sister, told police they saw Thompson attempt to strangle the woman before hearing her gunshots.
The two were “in a dating relationship,” the order says. There was a warning “for family violence” from a March incident in which “González was the victim,” according to court documents.
“Further investigation revealed that (González) went to Colorado to get an abortion and returned the night before. The suspect is believed to be the father of the child. The suspect did not want the complainant to have an abortion,” the order says.
“Thompson was arrested after the execution of the search warrant and refused to give a statement,” court documents say.
Thompson is charged with murder and assault on a family member/household member/impeding breathing or movement, Dallas County jail records show.
Thompson was denied bail during his first appearance before a judge on Thursday and would be appointed as a public defender, court records show.
González had three children from a previous relationship, the police report says.
