The outrage at Ja Morant’s second gun-waving incident in as many months has taken another turn with ESPN analyst Michael Wilbon saying his son is banned from owning the NBA star’s Nike shoes.
The 23-year-old Morant appeared in an Instagram video with a friend over the weekend waving a pistol in his hand, two months after he filmed himself doing the same thing in a Denver strip club.
Morant was suspended for eight games after that incident and attended a counselling course, later admitting that his behavior had been a distraction for his Memphis Grizzlies team in the NBA.
Now, he is facing a lengthier NBA ban and intensify scrutiny over commercial deals in place with the likes of Nike.
‘This is up to Ja, this is up to him,’ Wilbon said. ‘He is not a normal 23-year-old. There are people who could be around him who are going to have to help lead him out of this.
Michael Wilbon says he does not want his family spending money on Ja Morant’s Nike shoes
Morant appeared on an Instagram Live video on Saturday – where he was seen with a gun
Morant (L) was in the drivers seat of a car where he was seen holding up a pistol for the camera
‘Is he going to do the work that is required of himself to get out of this and for this not to be the end? What’s going to happen now – is Nike going to pull that shoe? Is Powerade going to pull that drink?
‘I know in my house, I told Matthew [my son] you can’t have the shoe. I’m not buying that shoe.
‘You’re not buying that shoe. Our money as a family is not going toward that. I’m not the only one who will feel that way.
Wilbon still praised the talent of Morant as he urged him to become more responsible away from the basketball court.
‘And by the way I am fascinated with Ja Morant. He is so smart, talk about intelligence – you listen to Ja Morant post-game and the engagement level and the intellect are unmistakable.
‘But yet this whole fake gangster theme that I thought we were past as a culture some years ago, Iguess he is not past it. It is sad.’
The Grizzlies have suspended star Morant ‘from all team activities’ after he was seen brandishing a gun on Instagram for the second time in two months.
Back in March, Morant appeared to hold up a gun in an Instagram Live video at a Denver club
Morant was seen on Instagram Live in the drivers seat of a car holding a pistol while singing along to the song ‘1.5’ by rapper YoungBoy NBA.
After revealing the firearm, the person recording the video immediately turned the camera away from Morant for the remainder of the clip that has surfaced.
It’s unclear if this incident will result in any criminal charges or an investigation for Morant’s behavior.
In a statement to DailyMail.com, the NBA says: ‘We are aware of the social media post involving Ja Morant and are in the process of gathering more information.’
