In addition, she advises residents to keep their pets on a leash and away from the water’s edge because the animals may appear to be prey to alligators.
Through its Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission hires alligator hunters throughout the state to eliminate alligators that may pose a threat. Residents can call a hotline to report concerns about these animals.
“In general, an alligator can be considered a nuisance if it is at least 1.2 meters and is believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property,” the agency’s website says.
The goal of the program is to “proactively address alligator threats in built-up areas while conserving alligators in areas where they occur naturally,” according to the website.
