Kyrie Irving almost ended up playing with Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat as opposed to missing the postseason with the Dallas Mavericks, according to Shams Charania.
Charania is now suggesting that the Heat are expected to be in the market to acquire another star player this offseason, and it could be Irving.
‘I think beyond that, they’re going to explore seeing the star market out there,’ Charania said.
‘Just to give you a glimpse of what they’ve looked at over the last several months, they made an offer to for Kyrie Irving at the deadline from what I’m told. Right before he got to the Mavericks.
‘There’s been some level of understanding that trying to get Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo another piece to take the load off.’
The Miami Heat reportedly tried to trade for point guard Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline
Irving ended up being dealt to the Dallas Mavericks and teaming with guard Luka Doncic
Miami is said to be looking for a star guard to pair with Jimmy Butler(L) and Bam Adebayo(R)
‘This Heat team, they made a great run this postseason…they feel like they may be one piece away.’
Miami is also said to be focused on retaining role players Gabe Vincent and Max Straus whom are both set to enter free agency although it is not certain either player will remain in South Beach.
The Heat have already been linked with trading for Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard, although it seems more likely by the day that Portland will decide to build around the aging guard rather than move him elsewhere.
If Miami were to go down the route of trading for a star guard rather than attempting to sign one in free agency they are indeed armed with several valuable assets.
These assets include sharp-shooting wings Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson, and three first-round draft picks over the next three seasons.
Irving has already been linked with the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets this offseason, along with of course staying put in Dallas.
The constant circulation of rumors ahead of his free agency recently led Irving to beg fans to stop tagging him in post about where he may play next year.
Nonetheless the 31-year-old guard who averaged 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.5 assists should provide a major boost whatever team he inks a deal with next season.
