(CNN) –– CoCo Lee, a popular Hong Kong-born singer, died Wednesday, her sisters Carol and Nancy shared in a social media post.
As reported, the artist had suffered from depression for “some years” and tried to take her own life last Sunday. CoCo Lee was hospitalized but could not be revived from a coma and she passed away on Wednesday. Multiple news outlets report that she was 48 years old.
“It is with great sadness that we are here to deliver the most devastating news: CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years, but her condition has dramatically deteriorated in recent months. Although CoCo sought professional help and did everything she could to combat her depression, unfortunately that demon inside of her got the best of her,” Carol and Nancy wrote.
And they added: “Despite the best efforts of the team to save her and treat her coma, she passed away on July 5, 2023.”
This year marks the 30th anniversary of her singing career. “Over the past 29 years, she has won countless international accolades with best-selling songs and left audiences with an astounding impression of her excellent live performances,” she read in the statement.
Her R&B sounds combined with Western hip hop also made her popular in the US According to previous CNN reports, Lee was born in Hong Kong but raised in San Francisco. After high school, she returned to her hometown for vacation, where she participated in a singing contest. Lee didn’t expect to do anything more than earn money for hitting her mother’s car in an accident. She took first prize in the contest, and that set the wheels in motion on her pop career.
“It is known that CoCo has worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers on the international music scene, and strove to shine for the Chinese people. We are proud of her! As a CoCo family, we are very grateful and honored to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are grateful to God for giving us such a kind angel,” they completed.
“Although CoCo was in the world for a short time, her light will last forever!” they concluded.
