(CNN) — Britney Spears gave details about an incident that occurred on Wednesday night involving Victor Wembanyama, a basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs, in Las Vegas.
The pop star recounted that a security guard punched her in the face when she tried to get Wembanyama’s attention. TMZ was the first to report the incident.
“Traumatic experiences are not new to me and I’ve had enough. I wasn’t prepared for what happened to me last night,” Spears wrote on her verified Instagram account Thursday.
He then described recognizing “an athlete in the lobby of my hotel on my way to dinner”, and later seeing him again at a restaurant in another hotel.
“I decided to go up to him and congratulate him on his success. There was a lot of noise, so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention,” he continued.
Spears, who did not name the senior rookie player in her social media post, specified that she is aware “of the athlete’s statement that he ‘got him from behind,’ but I just tapped him on the shoulder.” Then his security put his hand on my face without looking back, in front of a crowd.” Spears explained that her slap nearly knocked her off her feet.
“People surround me all the time,” Spears said. “In fact, that night, I was surrounded by a group of at least 20 fans. My security team didn’t hit anyone,” she stated.
Wembanyama referred to the incident early this Thursday, and said to journalists who did not see what happened. He pointed out that he was walking with his security through a corridor with many people and that he heard someone calling him, but that security had previously ordered him not to stop in the crowd.
“That person was calling me, ‘Sir, sir,’ and that person grabbed me from behind,” he said. “I didn’t see what happened because I was walking straight and they told me ‘don’t stop’. But that person grabbed me from behind, not by the shoulder, he grabbed me from behind. I only know that the security pushed her. I don’t know how hard , but security pushed her away. I didn’t stop to look,” he completed.
Wembanyama was then asked if he knew the person in question was Britney Spears, to which he replied: “I didn’t for a couple of hours. He added: “Then Spurs security told me it was Britney Spears. At first I thought, ‘No, you’re kidding,’ but yeah, it turns out she was Britney Spears. I never saw her face. I kept walking.”
Spears also wrote in her Instagram statement on Thursday that the incident is “too embarrassing to share with the world” but that “it is important to share this story and urge people in the public eye to lead by example and treat all others with respect.”
“Physical violence happens too much in this world. Often behind closed doors,” he said. And he added that “I have not yet received a public apology from the player, his security or his organization. I hope they do.”
“I appreciate the huge amounts of love and support I’m receiving right now. Thank you to the Las Vegas Police and detectives for your support,” he said.
When contacted by CNN, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) issued a statement acknowledging the incident, saying officers responded to a call “regarding an investigation of assault ” and that it was “documented in a police report and no arrests or citations have been issued.”
LVMPD did not provide further details.
CNN has contacted representatives for Spears and Wembanyama, as well as those for the San Antonio Spurs for further comment.
