(CNN) — A woman has been arrested in connection with the death of Robert De Niro’s grandson, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN on Friday.
Leandro De Niro Rodríguez was 19 years old at the time of his death, according to an announcement from his mother on social media last week. “It is with immeasurable shock and sadness that we say goodbye to our loving son Leo,” Drena De Niro posted in a statement from her on her verified social media. “We thank you for the outpouring of love and support and ask that we be given privacy at this time to process this inconsolable pain.”
Drena De Niro later shared the cause of death on social media, saying that Leandro had died after ingesting fentanyl.
The police source told CNN that a woman named Sofia Marks was arrested on a charge of selling drugs to a minor. However, she clarified that Marks is not charged with murder.
This is a “probable cause arrest” and the investigation is ongoing, according to the source. CNN is trying to contact Marks’ legal representation.
The Southern District of New York is handling the case, the source said.
