(Trends Wide) — A 9-month-old baby died in Florida after his teenage mother allegedly put fentanyl in his bottle before putting him down for a nap, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said.
Officers responded to a Callahan-area home Monday following an emergency call about a baby not breathing and not having a pulse, Leeper said at a news conference Wednesday. They tried to revive the baby until firefighters took him to a Jacksonville hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Leeper said.
“Originally, the mother said she didn’t know what happened. She had put the baby to sleep and she just couldn’t wake him up,” Leeper said.
The 17-year-old woman allegedly “changed her story several times” but eventually “confessed” that she was tired and wanted to take a nap, so she filled the baby’s bottle and put in some “what she thought was cocaine.” ” in the bottle, said the sheriff.
The substance was fentanyl, an opioid, according to the sheriff.
The medical examiner’s office said the boy had 10 times a fatal dose in his bloodstream and determined the cause of death was a fentanyl overdose.
Leeper reported that the boy’s death was caused by the mother’s negligence and “total disregard” for his safety.
“The suspect knowingly committed an act that she should have known, or reasonably should have known, would likely result in the death or serious bodily injury of her child,” Leeper said.
The young woman was charged with aggravated homicide and possession of a controlled substance.
Officials and the Florida Department of Children and Families are investigating the case.
