Serbian coal miners uncover ancient Roman ship

STORY: Serbian coal miners have uncovered an ancient Roman ship

the second such discovery in the area since 2020

Location: Kostolac, Serbia

Archeologists say the vessel was probably part of a river fleet

serving the sprawling and highly-developed Roman city of Viminacium

“We may assume that this ship is Roman, but we are unsure of its exact age. It may be from the first century AD, or it could be from the third or fourth.”

Archeologists plan to put the latest discovery on display with thousands of artefacts

unearthed from Viminacium near the town of Kostolac

“This will be a very challenging procedure, but with the assistance of our engineer friends from the mine in Drmno, who will prepare a special structure that will be lifted by the crane, and our conservators from the Archaeological Institute, who will protect the ship, so that the wood does not fail, the entire process of gradual conservation will follow here in our facilities to preserve the wood in stable conditions and for the ship to be exhibited within the archaeological park of Viminacium.”
