One of the Army’s most senior officers, Major General Colin Weir, has emphasized the need for soldiers to be ‘more ferocious’ in battle in order to defeat Britain’s biggest enemies. He stated that the previous belief that war was a decade away no longer holds true after the invasion of Ukraine, and warned that a conflict against a ‘peer enemy’ like Russia could occur within the next two years. Maj Gen Weir stressed the necessity for British soldiers to be quicker and better equipped to handle combat. He also acknowledged that elite units like the SAS, Parachute Regiment, and Royal Marines are likely to face heavy casualties in future conflicts, as demonstrated by the war in Ukraine. Maj Gen Weir expressed the Army’s commitment to learning from the events in Ukraine to strengthen its capabilities. He further predicted that future warfare would be chaotic and taxing on all fronts. Despite Russia’s significant losses in terms of personnel and equipment, the British Army, with around 78,000 personnel and 150 tanks, must be prepared for any conflict.
