The Israeli army announced – at dawn on Wednesday – that its fighters raided “military infrastructure” in Syria in response to missiles launched yesterday from this country towards Israel.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed to Agence France-Presse that this raid targeted sites inside Syria.
Lebanese media outlets close to the Syrian regime explained that the Israeli attack targeted two Syrian army military sites in the central countryside of Daraa, “carried out by enemy warplanes” from the airspace of the Syrian-Jordanian border and the far south of the occupied Syrian Golan.
On Tuesday evening, the Israeli army bombed Syrian territory with artillery, in response to what it said was an operation to launch rocket shells towards the Golan.
For its part, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth said that Iranian militias in the Daraa region were the ones who fired the two missiles towards the Golan.
On Sunday, the main airports in Damascus and Aleppo in Syria were out of service as a result of simultaneous Israeli bombing, which also led to the death of two civilians, according to the Syrian authorities.
This was the second time that an Israeli bombing targeted these two airports simultaneously, putting them out of service, since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip two weeks ago.
Since the start of the revolution in Syria in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes in this country, targeting regime forces positions and Iranian and Hezbollah targets. However, it does not confirm that it carried out the strikes, and merely repeats that it is determined to confront what it describes as Tehran’s attempts to establish its military presence in this country.
These developments coincide with Israel launching a war on Gaza following Operation “Al-Aqsa floodlaunched by the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (agitation) on the seventh of this month in response to Israeli violations in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Fears are increasing that the Israeli war on Gaza will lead to broader regional unrest, and will especially ignite other fronts, most notably the southern Lebanon front, where daily skirmishes take place between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, and the Golan front.
