The start of the match was delayed for about half an hour after a riot from the Argentine fans, and Brazilian security intervened to arrest some of the troublemakers.
Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, objected to the security’s treatment of the fans supporting his country’s national team, so he returned with the team members to the locker room before returning to the field again.

Fans of Brazil and Argentina began quarrels during the playing of the Brazilian national anthem, prompting police to file charges against fans of the visiting team, who responded by throwing stands seats at security personnel.
One of the Argentine fans lay on the field with his face covered in blood before he was taken away.
For his part, Messi accused the Brazilian police of brutality. He said – in a television interview at the stadium – “It was bad because we saw how they were beating people… As actually happened in the Copa Libertadores final, the police were hitting people again with sticks. Some players took their families to the stadium to attend the match.”

He continued, “We went to the dressing room because it was the best way to calm everything down, and the matter could have ended in tragedy. You think about the families and the people on the field who do not know what is happening, and we were more concerned with that than playing the match, which at that moment was a secondary issue.” .
For his part, Brazilian captain Marquinhos, who was seen speaking with Messi and some Argentine players during their attempts to calm the situation, expressed his dissatisfaction with these events.

He added, “Inside the stadium, it was difficult for us to understand what was happening. It was a very scary situation.”
Violent clashes broke out between fans of Boca Juniors of Argentina and Fluminense of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro before the Copa Libertadores final between the two clubs this month.
