The US Attorney’s Office in Arizona said on Friday Prisoners stabbed Derek Chauvin -Former police officer convicted of murder George Floyd- 22 times last week at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, according to the New York Times.
And Floyd appearedan African American (46 years old), was handcuffed for more than 9 minutes on May 25, 2020, before he died, while 9 police officers were trying to control him in a failed arrest operation.
The Minnesota judiciary convicted Chauvin of murder after a trial that was the focus of attention in 2021, and sentenced him to 22 and a half years in prison.
Prisoner John Torscak (52 years old), who is accused of stabbing Chauvin with a homemade knife on November 24, told investigators that he had been thinking about attacking Chauvin for about a month, because Chauvin is a “prominent prisoner.” Chauvin survived the attack.
According to a criminal complaint, Turscak attacked Chauvin inside the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison in Tucson. Officers immediately responded and used pepper spray to subdue Torscak, court documents state.
Torscak told officers he would have killed Chauvin “if the officers had not responded so quickly,” according to the complaint.
In an interview two days later with the FBI, Turscak denied wanting to kill Chauvin, but revealed he had been planning the assault for about a month.
Torscak said the date of the stabbing, which came the day after Black Friday, was “symbolic of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the black hand symbol associated with the Mexican Mafia criminal organization,” according to charging documents.
Federal prosecutors said – in a press release – that in addition to the attempted murder charge, Turscak was charged with assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
