Today, Saturday, December 9, coincides with the passage of a full year since the exciting confrontation between Argentina and the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022, and the widespread controversy it left behind.

Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz issued 16 yellow cards (a record in a single World Cup match), including 8 for Dutch players, and one red card, which went to Denzel Dumfries for receiving two warnings during the penalty shootout. Eight Argentine players also received warnings, along with coach Lionel Scaloni and his assistant Walter Samuel.

Aside from the disciplinary penalties, the fans present at the Education City Stadium lived a crazy scenario. Argentina advanced with goals from Nahuel Molina and captain Messi, who celebrated in a way that provoked coach Louis van Gaal and the Dutch national team’s substitute bench.
The level of excitement in the match increased, after Wout Fijhorst succeeded in equalizing the score 2-2 by scoring a goal before the end of regular time and another in the 11th minute of stoppage time.

With the tie still in the extra two halves, the two teams went to penalty kicks, in which Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez established himself as the undisputed champion by saving kicks from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis.
It is noteworthy that Argentina won the Qatar World Cup after winning on penalties 4-2 over France, achieving its third world title in its history.
