Zamalek of Egypt booked the first place in the quarter-finals of the Confederation Cup (Confederation) with a goalless draw with its host, Sagrada Esperanza of Angola – today, Wednesday – in the fourth round of the second group competitions.
This is Zamalek’s first qualification to the knockout rounds of African competitions, since reaching the CAF Champions League final in 2020, when it lost 1-2 to its traditional rival, Al-Ahly.
Zamalek maintained the lead in Group Two, raising its score to 10 points, six points ahead of Sagrada III. Later, Siwar Al-Ghani, bottom of the standings without points, will meet Abu Salim Al-Liby, second with 6 points.
Around the corner
In the fourth group, Morocco’s RS Berkane advanced to the quarter-finals, after returning from the homeland of its host, “Diable Noir of Congo”, with a 1-1 draw.
The Moroccan team, seeking its third title in the competition after 2020 and 2022, neglected to qualify, as it failed to take advantage of its host’s numerical deficiency throughout half an hour of the match, as the host team succeeded in stopping “Brakna’s” series of victories.
The Congolese team – contrary to the course of the first half – was able to take the lead through Alvis Ngakoso (41). The Moroccan team pressed throughout the second half, and quickly equalized through Youssef Zaghoudi (53).
Diable Noire continued the match with ten players after Janard Kambamba was sent off for receiving a second warning (60), but Berkane’s attempts did not succeed in deciding the result.
In the same group, Stade Mali defeated its guest, Sekokoni of South Africa, with a clean goal.
RS Berkane raised its score to 10 points in the lead against the Financial Stadium with 7 points, while Sikokoni comes third with 4 points and Diable Noir is fourth with a single point.
The Algerian Federation is approaching
In the first group, defending champion Ittihad Algeria followed the example of RS Berkane and advanced to the quarter-finals by drawing 0-0 with its host Future of Egypt in the exclusive Arab summit in Cairo.
The Algerian team was close on several occasions to resolving the confrontation, but it lacked the final touch to translate its control into victory, while the Egyptian team relied on quick rebounds.
Ittihad Al-Capital raised its score to 10 points at the top, with a difference of 3 points in front of Future II.
Later, SuperSport United of South Africa, bottom of the standings without points, will meet its guest, Al Hilal of Libya, third with 3 points.
In the third group, Ghana’s Dreams swept its guest, Angola’s Academica do Lobito, 4-0 in Cape Coast, scored in turns by Agyenim Boateng Mensah (35), Buyo Ade (49 fouls against his team), veteran John Antwi (74), and Tamiko Nuhu (90 + 2).
Dreams raised its score to 9 points with its third victory, temporarily leading the group by 3 points ahead of its closest rivals, Rivers United of Nigeria and Africa of Tunisia, who will meet later in Rades. Academica suffered its fourth loss and remained without a score.
