Armenian separatist leader Samvel Shahramanyan retracted on Friday a previous decision to dissolve what was called the unilaterally declared “Republic of Artsakh” in the region. Nagorny Karabagh Which Azerbaijan regained after a lightning war last September.
During a meeting with other leaders in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, Shahramanyan confirmed the cancellation of the decision to dissolve the institutions of the former separatist entity that he had previously announced on September 28, and this decision was supposed to enter into force at the beginning of next January.
The separatist leader said, “In the legal sphere of the Republic of Artsakh (the Armenian name for the Nagorno-Karabakh region), there is no document stipulating the dissolution of government institutions.”
The separatist leader issued the decision to dissolve the unilaterally declared republic after 30 years of its establishment, following the defeat of the separatist forces at the hands of the Azerbaijani army.
However, the reversal of the decision remains largely symbolic, as Shahramanyan no longer has any influence over Nagorno-Karabakh, as the region is completely under the control of Azerbaijan.
After the recent war that ended the Armenian separatists’ control over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan and Armenia began a path to normalize relations, and a week ago the two countries exchanged prisoners, and they also resumed border demarcation negotiations.
