A British broadcaster became emotional while hosting the Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative Mustafa BarghoutiAnd her screaming at him, accusing him of not being accustomed to having a woman speak. Angry reactions reached the point of demanding that she be investigated and dismissed.
Broadcaster Julia Hartley Brewer – on the British channel Talk TV – appeared emotional and tense during her interview with Barghouti, who was talking about the crimes of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, and trying to shed light on the corruption issues that are haunting the Israeli Prime Minister. Benjamin Netanyahu.
The broadcaster interrupted her guest more than once, and told him when he tried to talk about Netanyahu’s corruption issues: “We do not have enough time to talk about Netanyahu’s history, as he is not a popular figure in Israel.”
She also attacked Barghouti personally, as she said to him while shouting: “Maybe you are not accustomed to having a woman speaking.” Barghouthi responded to her by saying, “You are misleading the audience with what you just said.” Then the broadcaster ended her speech by saying that she apologized for being a woman speaking to him.
According to the Middle East Eye website, commentators and observers called on the British telecommunications sector regulator, Ofcom, to open an investigation against the broadcaster because of her actions and the style of her conversation with Barghouti.
“Bias and unprofessionalism”
The Networks program (7/1/2024) monitored some of the British public’s comments on what the broadcaster Brewer did, including what Antonio wrote: “She should be dismissed from her job because of her biased stance and unprofessionalism. Do you think she dares to speak to an Israeli official in this way?” Tone?
While Tiffany tweeted: “This woman is terrible and needs to be reminded of basic interviewing rules and general understanding of politeness! Especially if she is being watched by millions.. She is a huge disgrace and should be replaced from her job. She is not qualified for it.”
Peter believed that the interview “was not nice, because Julia frankly showed prejudice against Mustafa because of his identity, and not based on what he said or how he said what he said,” considering the use of the word woman “undermines the concept of feminism.”
As for Amin, he wrote, “This is how the Western media behaves when its argument is weak!! Barghouti seemed confident in his words, his principles, and that he was right, but as for her, her hatred prevailed over her professionalism.”
In turn, Barghouti said that his calmness in the face of the broadcaster’s screaming is because he is not addressing her, but rather addressing her audience. His goal is not to persuade her, but rather to reach her followers and correct the incorrect ideas some of them have about the Palestinians, adding, “We must confront him with the facts…the media is a form of Resistance”.
