Russia and Israel…double standards
Not only did the International Olympic Committee refuse to take a decision against Israeli athletes similar to what it took against Russian athletes, but it announced that it was taking action against athletes who organize “boycott and discrimination campaigns” against representatives of Israel.
In a statement issued on November 3, 2023, the International Olympic Committee considered that Moscow’s attempt to compare the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee to the situation of Israeli athletes was “misplaced, because they are not responsible for the decisions of their governments,” as it put it.
The International Olympic Committee’s statements came in response to a question related to Israeli athletes participating in the Olympic Games in Paris, and the possibility of athletes from other countries refusing to compete against them due to the current ongoing conflict.
In March 2022, the International Olympic Committee decided to permanently exclude Russia and Belarus from the Winter Paralympic Games hosted by China that year against the backdrop of the Russian attack on Ukraine. The Committee justified this exclusion as “to preserve the integrity of these games and the safety of all participants.”
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the International and European Football Associations decided to exclude the Russian national team from the 2022 World Cup finals and not allow its teams and clubs to participate in any tournament, and the International Association of Athletics Federations followed suit.
The International Olympic Committee accused Russia of “violating the Olympic Truce,” before urging international federations to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from their competitions.
Russia was also stripped of sports tournaments on its soil, most notably in tennis, the Volleyball World Championship, and the Russian Grand Prix in Formula One.
Regarding the Paris Olympics, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed, in his interview with the French newspaper “L’Equipe” in September 2023, that the Russian flag will not be present at the Summer Olympics scheduled to be held in the capital, Paris, next summer, 2024.
Macron told the daily newspaper, “The flag cannot be raised at a time when Russia is committing war crimes,” stressing that the latter will not be represented in the Paris Olympics as a country.
Macron’s statements came after the International Olympic Committee announced its decision that athletes from Russia and Belarus can participate in the games as long as they compete as individuals and under a neutral flag that does not support the war in Ukraine.
In December 2023, the International Olympic Committee set strict conditions for Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Paris Olympics, which Moscow described as “discriminatory.”
According to the committee’s statement, “Only athletes (individual, neutral) who have managed to pass the qualifiers and do not actively support the war in Ukraine are entitled to participate, and are not under contract with the army or national security agencies.”
The International Olympic Committee said, “11 of them currently meet these criteria (8 from Russia and 3 from Belarus), and no flag will be raised, any anthem heard, any colors published or anything else related to Russia and Belarus during the Olympics or any official venue and event.” Olympic”.
According to the statement, “No Russian or Belarusian government official will be allowed to obtain an accreditation card during the Olympic Games.”
The International Olympic Committee was established on June 23, 1894 in Paris as an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization, and is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is the highest sporting authority in the world, supervising the organization of the Olympic Games once every 4 years.
