Al Jazeera Media Institute launched the program “Island Fellowship” for the year 2024, which targets journalists or researchers in journalism and media affairs, and other related fields.
The “Al Jazeera Fellowship” extends for two consecutive months, divided into two phases, the first being remotely, where the researcher prepares his plan and completes the introduction to the research remotely, followed by the final phase at the Al Jazeera Media Network headquarters, which includes completing the rest of the research phases.
This program was also designed to give journalists and researchers the opportunity to write a research paper of approximately 7,000 words about one of the fields of journalism. The applicant for the program will be able to join one of the work teams within Al Jazeera Network, learn about the work environment closely, meet editors-in-chief, journalists, and those concerned with the research topic, in addition to working in an appropriate environment that includes diverse experiences, and provides academic and professional support and guidance, as well as access to references and information sources that it possesses. Al Jazeera Network, such as the archive and library of the Al Jazeera Center for Studies, equipment and devices for media work, the museum, and others.
To join the Al Jazeera Fellowship Program, applicants must meet specific conditions: a bachelor’s degree, work experience in the media field of no less than two years, the applicant has solid, objective writing skills, initial research capabilities in academic sources, in addition to very good linguistic skill in spoken Arabic and English. The Al Jazeera Fellowship for the year 2024 has been allocated to research related to artificial intelligence and its applications in journalism, to address the applications of artificial intelligence in journalistic work. This field focuses on research that reviews the applications of artificial intelligence that are employed in different types of journalistic work in order to improve their journalistic quality, such as: applications of artificial intelligence in data journalism, applications of artificial intelligence in newsrooms, and applications of artificial intelligence in investigative journalism.
The program addresses the applications of artificial intelligence in verifying news, fact-finding, and detecting misinformation and manipulation, as well as the field of new journalistic styles created by artificial intelligence. This field focuses on research that reviews new journalistic patterns developed by artificial intelligence, such as automated journalism, immersive journalism, and other journalistic patterns developed by artificial intelligence.
The third field is concerned with: Journalism Ethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and focuses on research that reviews the ethical considerations that journalists must pay attention to when employing artificial intelligence applications in their journalistic work, and the best practices to overcome them, such as: the bias of artificial intelligence algorithms, the accuracy of the information it provides. Artificial intelligence, the challenge of the marginalization of digitally unrepresented communities, the Western centralization of artificial intelligence research and its failure to meet the needs of the countries of the South. Finally: the potential security risks of employing artificial intelligence in journalistic work.
It is noteworthy that the last date for receiving applications is January 30, 2024.
