DANNY MILLS: Everyone is saying my son George is just like me – but if my Olympics dream almost ended after a push, I’d have been arrested!

Watching my son George Mills race at the Olympics is as bad for my nerves as taking a penalty in a sudden-death shootout.

I know how much hard work and sacrifice has gone into making it to Paris and it would have been devastating if he’d been knocked out because of a collision in his 5,000 metres heat.

The race was going pretty much to plan until the final 100m. 

George kept himself around the pack, which was cruising at a very slow time, and he was always comfortable.

Hugo Hay, the French runner, gave him a bit of a push and it caused carnage as George and a few other racers hit the deck.

The Team GB runner is the son of former Premier League and England full back Danny, right, 

Mills was among the runners sent sprawling on the track following a collision in the final 100m  

For their Olympics to be ended by something that wasn’t their fault would have been hard to take so I’m pleased they were all reinstated for the final.

George wagged his finger at the Frenchman after the race. 

I spoke to him afterwards and he’ll regret acting the way he did but it was an emotional response. 

He could have handled it better but how are you expected to react if you’re Olympic dream is taken away from you in 10 seconds.

It’s easy to photoshop it next to a picture of me squaring up to Robbie Savage but it’s not an accurate comparison. 

Everyone is saying, ‘He’s just like his dad’ but we are totally different characters. If I was the one on that track, my reaction would probably have got me disqualified and arrested!

Fans on social media were quick to suggest Mills had the same fighting spirit as his dad

It will be a proud moment watching George in the final. He would have snapped your hand off to play for Chelsea or England but running chose him and he’s put so much work into it. 

We’ve all been out in Paris since the first heat; his mum, brothers, sister, friends. 

We’ll keep travelling and we’ll keep supporting but for the sake of our health we’d like him to keep things a little easier!
