The Russian website “News Re” says that the explosions that rocked Lebanon are considered an announcement of a new form of war, and wondered about the possibility of the United States blowing up smartphones in Russia, conveying the opinions of some Russian experts.
The website, in a report written by Kirill Nikolaev and Pavel Vorobyov, highlighted the attacks that targeted the Lebanese Hezbollah during the past few days through pagers, and the possibility of Western countries booby-trapping mobile phones imported by Russia.
The authors explained that Russian experts had assured him that the Russian government should take preventive measures so that Russian officials would not be the target of similar attacks. They also said that experts in physics had told them about using a new type of weapons of mass destruction that would select the victim in a targeted manner.
Russia should pay attention
The report quoted the expert Berendzhiev as confirming that smartphones imported by Russia from Western countries can be booby-trapped, adding that, of course, there is a similar risk that should be taken into account and that all devices arriving from abroad should be checked to ensure that there are no hidden threats, including the possibility of them being booby-trapped by hostile intelligence services. “This is difficult, because all devices need to be checked, not just some of the parts in the shipment.”
According to Berendzhiev, the current circumstances require Russia to develop its domestic production of devices, which will ensure a greater level of safety.
He continued by saying that the threats are really serious, and called for discussing this issue at the level of the Russian Security Council, “Decisions must be taken to confront the new threat coming from abroad.”
For his part, physicist and military specialist Alexander Shirokorad warns of the danger posed by smartphone batteries, saying: “This is a very scary weapon… It can be compared to a nuclear bomb. Any mobile phone with a much larger battery can also explode, and the explosion will certainly lead to the death of the person who was holding the phone. The lithium battery in an electric car can also explode.”
