FIFA announced on Friday that the first edition of the annual Confederations Cup, which includes clubs from all over the world, will include five matches, with Real Madrid, the European Champions League champion, playing in the final on December 18 in Doha, which will host three matches in the tournament.
The tournament, which was announced in December last year, replaces the annual Club World Cup, which will now be held every four years with 32 teams starting in 2025.
Al Ain FC, the Asian Champions League champions, will host Auckland City FC, the Oceania Champions League champions, on September 22 in the play-off round for the Africa, Asia and Pacific Cup, with the winner set to meet Al Ahly FC, the African Champions League champions, in Cairo on October 29.
The first two matches will be played at the home ground of the highest ranked team, allowing local fans to watch their team's games.
The action then moves to the Qatari capital, Doha, where the 2024 Copa Libertadores champions will meet the Mexican team Pachuca, the CONCACAF Champions Cup champions, on December 11, in a match that FIFA has described as the “Summit of the Americas.”
The winners of those two matches will meet each other in the Challenge Cup three days later for a place in the Confederations Cup final against Real Madrid on December 18 in Doha, the same day as the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar at Lusail Stadium.
