NCHSAA football: Stuart Cramer at Hunter Huss highlights
Hunter Huss football rolled past Stuart Cramer, 46-21, in a key Big South 3A matchup for teams with aspirations of qualifying for postseason play.
The 2024 high school football season has come to a close for those in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties. However, here’s an opportunity for fans to have their say as to who they believe were the players were best this fall.
Here are 24 nominees from the Gastonia, Shelby area vying for the 2024 fan’s choice award. Voting will run through 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 29, with the winner announced days later.

Offensive Player of the Year
- Patrick Blee, South Point (Jr.): Rushed for 1,054 yards and 14 touchdowns, in addition to throwing for 10 TDs.
- Treylen Bost, Lincolnton (Sr.): Rushed for 1,468 yards and 11 touchdowns.
- Javarion Brown, Hunter Huss (Sr.): Threw for 1,752 yards and 19 touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 1,009 yards and eight more TDs.
- Aiden Carson, Crest (Sr.): Rushed for 1,149 yards and 28 touchdowns, in addition to four TD receptions.
- Lan Farmer, Shelby (Jr.): Threw for 2,723 yards and 32 touchdowns.
- Grayson Harvey, Mountain Island Charter (Sr.): Threw for an area-high 2,765 yards and 21 touchdowns.
- Grant Lawless, East Lincoln (Jr.): Threw for 2,650 yards and 36 touchdowns.
- Keon Smith, Bessemer City (Jr.): Rushed for 1,227 yards and 11 touchdowns.
- Martino Smith, Ashbrook (Jr.): Rushed for 1,022 yards and 10 touchdowns.
- William Vaughn, Kings Mountain (Jr.): Caught 45 passes for 994 yards and nine touchdowns.
- Shannon Wingate, North Lincoln (Jr.): Rushed for an area-high 2,078 yards and 32 touchdowns.
- Jaylin Winnex, West Lincoln (Sr.): Rushed for 1,030 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Year
- De’shawn Bey, Forestview (Sr.): Had 48 tackles and four interceptions.
- Kingston Curry, East Gaston (So.): Finished with 38 tackles and an area-high 12 interceptions.
- Jason Easton, Mountain Island Charter (Jr.): Finished with an area-high 17 sacks.
- Eli Goodson, Burns (Sr.): Had 83 tackles and five interceptions.
- Caleb Gordon, Ashbrook (Jr.): Tallied an area-high 141 tackles (eight for a loss), four sacks and two interceptions.
- Eli Lipscomb, Kings Mountain (Sr.): Finished with 131 tackles and seven sacks.
- Jalaythan Mayfield, Lincolnton (So.): Finished with 109 tackles and 10 sacks.
- Gene Neely, Hunter Huss (Sr.): Tallied 115 tackles and four interceptions.
- Nick Norris, Shelby (Sr.): Led the Golden Lions with 87 tackles.
- Kade Sturgill, North Lincoln (Sr.): Had 133 tackles (16 for a loss), four sacks and two interceptions.
- Gavin Smith, South Point (Jr.): Finished 62 tackles and a team-high nine interceptions.
- Enijahe Whitworth, Cherryville (So.): Had four interceptions.
