North Central College, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III football, is going to play for a national championship for the fifth consecutive time after a 66-0 victory over Susquehanna in the second of Saturday’s two national semifinals.
The Cardinals (14-0) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the opening quarter at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, Illinois, and never looked back, cruising to their 37th straight home victory, a streak that began in 2018.
In the Division III Playoffs, North Central is 35-13 overall and 23-4 at home.
The Cardinals advance to the 2024 Stagg Bowl to face the Mount Union, a 45-37 winner over Johns Hopkins in the day’s other semifinal.
The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 5 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston. It will be a rematch of the 2022 title tilt, where North Central topped Mount Union 28-21 to win its second national championship in three seasons.
Mount Union (14-0) is searching for a record-extending 14th Division III football national title and first since 2017. North Central’s run of Stagg Bowl appearances includes victories in 2019 and 2022.
Against Susquehanna, North Central was led by graduate quarterback Luke Lehnen, who completed 16 of 17 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns. His fourth touchdown toss of the day tied the Division III mark for career touchdown passes with 158.
Two of Saturday’s touchdowns passes were caught by graduate receive Jacob Paradee as part of a team-leading three-catch, 86-yard day.
Lehnen added 30 yards and a touchdown on seven rushes Saturday, while sophomore running back Jordan Williams led the ground attack with 16 carries for 106 yards and a score. Senior Joe Sacco had 82 net yards and two touchdowns.
Lehnen is one of five finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, the top individual award in Division III football, which he won in 2023. The 2024 winner will be announced on D3football.com on Jan. 3.
In all, North Central tallied 638 yards of total offense (352 on the ground and 286 through the air), while the 66 points was the fifth time this season the Cardinals have eclipsed the 60-point mark, including a high of 70 on two occasions.
The North Central defense was spectacular in the win, too, holding Susquehanna to 135 total yards (75 passing and 60 rushing) and just five first downs, compared to 32 for the Cardinals. North Central also had three sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery on the day.
Four Susquehanna quarterbacks saw action Saturday, with standout junior Josh Ehrlich limited to a 3-for-11 day for 13 yards, along with one of the interceptions. Freshman Rahshan La Mons managed a team-best 72 yards on 14 rushes.
Susquehanna sees its season end at 12-2, a program-best performance that also marks the team’s fourth 10-win campaign in five seasons.
The two-time reigning Landmark Conference champions were making their first national semifinal appearance since 1991 and were playing for their first trip to the championship game.
The River Hawks now are 6-6 in the postseason. They reached the playoffs in 1986 (1-1), 1991 (2-1), 2009 (0-1), 2022 (0-1), 2023 (0-1) and 2024 (3-1).
Until Saturday, Susquehanna hadn’t lost a road game since 2021.
The showdown between Susquehanna and North Central was the first meeting in history between the two programs and the first time the Cardinals have faced a team from the Landmark Conference, which crowned its first football champion in 2023.

North Central dominated in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin this year, ran unbeaten through conference play for the fourth consecutive time, swept the CCIW’s major awards and landed a record-tying 19 players on the All-CCIW teams.

About Susquehanna Football
This is the 125th season of Susquehanna football, which began in 1892, but it’s only the sixth playoff appearance for the River Hawks, who finished the regular season ranked No. 6 in the AFCA Division III Coaches Poll.
The team’s recent surge of success has resulted in four 10-win performances in the last five seasons (51 wins overall), back-to-back championships in the new Landmark Conference and now three consecutive trips to the Division III Playoffs.
This year’s goal, however, is to continue taking advantage of the new postseason format and a first-round bye.
In 2022 and 2023, Susquehanna entered the postseason undefeated (10-0 both times), only to be bounced from the first round of the playoffs.
Perseverance paid off this year, and the River Hawks got to skip the dreaded first round. Now, they’re making their first semifinal appearance since 1991 and are playing for their first trip to the championship game.
In previous postseason action, Susquehanna is 6-5. The River Hawks reached the playoffs in 1986 (1-1), 1991 (2-1), 2009 (0-1), 2022 (0-1), 2023 (0-1) and now 2024 (3-0).
This year, the River Hawks have averaged 45.54 points (10th in Division III) and 511.4 total yards (third in Division III) per game.
Susquehanna is led by quarterback Josh Ehrlich, who became the program’s first QB with at least 3,000 passing yards in a season and at least 30 touchdown passes in a season.
Running back Rahshan La Mons tops the Landmark Conference rushing list with an average of 121.4 yards per game and nearly 1,600 yards for the season.

About North Central College Football
North Central has been the No. 1 team in the last 32 AFCA regular-season polls and played for the national championship in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023, winning in 2019 and 2022.
Oh, and the Cardinals own a 36-game home winning streak that began in 2018.
In the Division III Playoffs, North Central is 34-13 overall and 22-4 at home.
Last week, also at home, the Cardinals held the top rushing offense in Division III football this year, Springfield College, to 227 rushing yards and just a single field goal in a 27-3 victory.
The Pride entered the game averaging 443 rushing yards per game, more than 100 ahead of Salisbury (318+) and North Central (307).
This season, graduate quarterback Luke Lehnen was named the D3football.com Region 5 Offensive Player of the Year, CCIW Offensive Student-Athlete of the Year and the Associated Press Division III National Offensive Player of the Year.
On Dec. 19, he was announced as one of five finalists for the 2024 Gagliardi Trophy, the top individual award in Division III football. He won the award in 2023 after starting all 15 games for the Cardinals. The 2024 winner will be announced on D3football.com on Jan. 3.
He also became the all-division leader in career touchdowns responsible for (203) and consecutive games with a touchdown pass (57), plus Division III career records for offensive yards (15,327) and a school record for touchdown passes (154) – all with at least a game to go.
North Central lost last year’s Stagg Bowl to Cortland, 38-37. The Cardinals led 7-3 at halftime, and the teams combined for 41 points in the final quarter.
The Cardinals scored with 1:20 left to play in the game, but Lehnen was stopped short of the goal line on the two-point attempt. Cortland ran out the clock for the victory.
In 2022, North Central topped Mount Union for the title, 28-21. In 2021, Mary Hardin-Baylor bested the Cardinals, 57-24. In 2019, North Central defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater, 41-14.
