HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Firefighters in Huntington spent Christmas morning fighting a fire at an abandoned commercial building.
Huntington Fire Chief Greg Fuller said multiple calls were reported to Cabell County 911 around 4:22 a.m. Wednesday.
The fire was reported in the 2400 block of 5th Avenue at an abandoned commercial building that at one time used hazardous materials, according to Chief Fuller.
When firefighters arrived on scene, Chief Fuller said they used defensive firefighting tactics due to the unsafe condition of the building.
Chief Fuller said there were reports that unsheltered people tend to sleep in the building, but no one was found.
The fire chief said crews will remain on scene most of Wednesday as the fire continues to smolder.
5th Avenue is closed to traffic in the area.
