The Portland Police Bureau is watching out for “copycat” attacks inspired by the deadly Jan. 1 attack in New Orleans in which a driver used a car to mow down New Year’s Day revelers, but it has learned of no specific threats in the Portland area, police said Monday.
Portland police are in “continuous communication” with federal law enforcement agencies, and officers “are being vigilant for any suspicious activity,” the Police Bureau said.
Asked if the FBI has warned Portland-area police departments about potential copycats, Oregon’s FBI office said it “regularly shares information with our law enforcement partners to assist in protecting the communities we serve.”
“The U.S. remains in a heightened threat environment and watchful for potential threats to public safety,” the FBI added in the emailed statement. “We will work with our partners to determine their credibility, share information, and take appropriate investigative action.”
Both the FBI and Portland police asked members of the public to report suspicious activity.
