Trump says he’s renaming Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’
President-elect Donald Trump told reporters he plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who has been indicted for plotting a coup to overturn the country’s 2022 election, has been invited to the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Jan. 20, he announced on X Wednesday.
Bolsonaro said he was seeking to obtain his passport, which was confiscated in February 2024.
Bolsonaro has been barred from running for political office in Brazil until 2030 and faces criminal charges. He has denied any wrongdoing. The right-wing populist’s brand of politics has long drawn comparisons to Trump.
The former Brazilian president said he was “very honored” to receive the invitation from Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance and thanked his son Eduardo Bolsonaro, a politician and police officer, for his work in maintaining a relationship with the Trump family.
He said his lawyer has already made a request to get his passport back so he could “attend this honorable and important historical event.”
On Jan. 8, 2023, Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed the presidential palace, Supreme Court and Congress, demanding that he be restored to power. The incident reminded observers of the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The House Select Committee report into the Jan. 6 attack found that Trump criminally engaged in a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the lawful results of the 2020 presidential election and failed to act to stop his supporters from attacking the Capitol.
The case was dismissed in November at the request of special counsel Jack Smith after Trump was re-elected for president.
