Your Labor Day 2025 Guide: What’s Open and Closed

Labor Day, a federal holiday celebrating the American labor movement, falls on Monday, September 1, this year. As the unofficial end of summer, the holiday signifies closures for many government services and banks. However, most retail stores remain open, providing shopping opportunities for those seeking holiday deals.

While specific hours can vary by location, here is a guide to what is open and closed on Labor Day 2025.

Retail and Grocery Stores

Most major retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot, will operate under normal hours.

For grocery shoppers, Costco warehouses will be closed. Aldi will be open with limited hours, and most Whole Foods locations will also be open, though customers should check their local store for specific times. Trader Joe’s and stores under the Kroger umbrella—such as Kroger, Harris Teeter, and Ralphs—will operate on their usual schedules.

CVS stores and pharmacies will remain open, but hours may vary. Walgreens stores will also be open, though most of its pharmacies will be closed, with the exception of 24-hour locations.

Mail and Shipping Services

The U.S. Postal Service will be closed, with no mail pickup or delivery.

UPS will not conduct pickups or deliveries, and most of its retail locations will be closed. However, the UPS Express Critical service will remain operational.

Most FedEx services will also be suspended for the holiday. FedEx Office locations will be open with modified hours, and FedEx Custom Critical services will be available.

Financial Institutions and Government Offices

As a federal banking holiday, most banks will be closed. Online banking platforms and ATMs will remain accessible. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed for trading.

All federal, state, and local government offices—including courts, DMVs, and public libraries—will be closed in observance of the holiday.
