Winter Storm Cora is sweeping through the Southeast and Ohio Valley, delivering a mess of snow and some ice from Tennessee to the Carolinas and Virginia, including Charlotte and Raleigh. The wintry mess is snarling travel and in some cases icing could be heavy enough to cause power outages and tree damage.

Cora’s Latest Status And Alerts
The winter storm is producing a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain over parts of many southern states and the Ohio Valley, as depicted in the radar snapshot below.
Here is a sampling of storm reports from Cora:
- The heaviest storm total so far is 14.3 inches in Mena, Arkansas.
- Portions of the Atlanta and Birmingham metro areas have picked up 1 to 4 inches of snow and sleet. Freezing rain has now developed in parts of the Atlanta area with some ice accumulations in trees up to one-quarter inch reported just west of the metro area.
- Anywhere from 7 to 11 inches of snow has fallen in the Little Rock area and the Memphis metro has measured from 4 to 7 inches of snowfall.
- Dallas-Fort Worth officially saw 2.6 inches, with heavier totals of 6 inches or more north of the Metroplex. Most of that fell on Thursday. It’s their heaviest snowfall since Valentine’s Day 2021.
Various winter weather alerts, including winter storm warnings and advisories, are shown in the map below. Those winter alerts are in effect in Atlanta, Charlotte, Louisville, Nashville and Raleigh.
Expect dangerous travel conditions, delays and closures in some of these areas from this storm, especially in the darker teal areas.
Forecast Timing
Saturday
- The storm will be leaving the East, but some areas of snow may linger near the Eastern Seaboard, as well as in the Appalachians, especially early.
- Travel could be challenging from snow and ice that has already fallen from the Tennessee Valley to the Delmarva Peninsula, especially early.
Additional Snow And Ice
- Several more inches of snowfall through Saturday are expected over much of the northern Appalachians and parts of the East. The map below shows how much additional snowfall to expect in these areas on top of what has already fallen.
- Some areas of the middle Carolinas may pick up some additional light icing through the morning hours.
Thursday’s Recap
Up to 12 inches of snow fell in parts of the Texas Panhandle, far eastern New Mexico and into Oklahoma.
Dallas-Fort Worth Airport measured 2.6 inches of snow, mostly on Thursday, but areas north of there saw higher totals of 6 inches or more.
