Well, Netflix seems more than eager to put out new seasons of two of its biggest spy/thriller series, and we have entered an odd situation where both The Night Agent and The Recruit are being released this month just a single week apart.
- The Night Agent season 2 will be out on January 23, 2025
- The Recruit season 2 will be out January 30, 2025
In an interesting move, despite both being returning second seasons of popular shows, Netflix is not doing the “split the season in half a month apart” thing that they have done the past few years. All ten episodes of The Night Agent and all six episodes of The Recruit will be out on those release dates. Netflix also recently did this with Squid Game and a few other big series, and I think they may be phasing this practice out. My guess is they saw too much drop-off between that month gap, and they really want people to be finishing these shows. The idea that people would be forced to subscribe for two months instead of one does not seem worth the trade, I guess.
The higher profile of the two series would be The Night Agent. That has become the seventh most-viewed series in Netflix history with 98.2 million views, just behind Bridgerton season 3. Review scores for both shows are an interesting split. The Night Agent has a near-identical 74% critic score and a 78% audience score. Meanwhile The Recruit has a 68% critic score and a higher 84% audience score. But average those out and yeah, both have similar reception, albeit The Night Agent has been watched a lot more.
I do find it somewhat amusing that these two shows are airing just a week apart, given how similar they are in subject matter. But Netflix is probably understanding that they do not need any more official delays. Season 1 of The Recruit aired all the way back in December of 2022. The Night Agent season 1 was in March 2023. So both shows are pretty close to the two-year mark, and fans are tired of waiting for them.
Unless there’s some sort of disastrous turn, it seems likely that both of these shows may go on to get a season 3, especially The Night Agent with the kind of numbers that season 1 put up. I would call these relative “sleeper hits” in that they do not get all the headlines or set any huge records, but they are powerhouses to some extent in Netflix’s roster of perfectly “watchable” series. Both of these are back very shortly now, stay tuned for reviews.
