BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The WAFB Weather Team is posting a First Alert Weather Day for Tuesday with the potential for significant winter weather impacts on the board.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Before the significant arrives early next week, we’ll have plenty of time to make preps this weekend. A few showers early on Saturday will quickly give way to drier and mild weather. But the bottom falls out by Saturday night, with Sunday’s highs not getting out of the 40s.
PIPE-THREATENING FREEZE
Everyone in the WAFB viewing area should get exposed pipes wrapped this weekend. A series of hard freezes is expected next week and will begin as soon as Monday morning for areas near and north of the interstates. Make sure people, pets, plans, and pipes are all protected.
GOOD CHANCES OF SNOW
Model guidance continues to point toward good chances for wintry precipitation, particularly snow, by Tuesday. Low pressure moving eastward through the Gulf will sling moisture up-and-over the very cold air already in place. Precipitation could begin as soon as late Monday night and should diminish by Tuesday evening.
SNOW AMOUNTS
Take the map below with a big grain of salt, but it’s the best estimate that I can provide as of Friday evening. The map is a plot of ‘National Blend of Model’ data and shows the potential for much of the area to receive anywhere from 1″ to 4″ of snow. If anything close to this occurs, we should be prepared for travel issues extending from Tuesday into Wednesday for parts of the area.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK
Very cold weather will continue through the week, with some potential for precipitation to return by Thursday or Friday. Most signs point toward anything late in the week falling as liquid rain, but we’ll monitor trends. Temperatures should finally start to rebound by the following weekend.
