ANTIOCH, Tenn. (WZTV) — One student is dead and another is in stable condition after a teenage shooter shot both of them inside Antioch High School Wednesday, authorities confirm.
Metro Nashville Police Department’s Don Aaron says the shooter is identified as Solomon Henderson, a 17-year-old male student at the high school. MNPD says Henderson entered the school cafeteria and shot a 16-year-old Hispanic girl identified as Josselin Corea Escalante. She died from injuries sustained.
A male student, 17, was shot in the arm and has since been released from Vanderbilt Hospital. There were four total transports in this incident, with the fourth student sustaining face injuries from a fall, not from being shot.
Police say around 11 a.m. Wednesday, the shooter entered the school’s cafeteria with a pistol and fired multiple shots. Police add the gunman shot himself, resulting in his death. Police add the shooter rode the bus to school Wednesday.
MNPD started receiving calls for service at 11:11 a.m. MNPD Chief John Drake says there was an immediate response from the department’s units and beyond.
Once MNPD responded, officers searched the entire school for additional victims and shooters. None were found.
Authorities report a reunification site for parents is at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, located at 3754 Murfreesboro Pike. Buses will be transporting students there. Parents who need information on the renunciation center can call 615-401-1712.
MNPD’s Don Aaron said two school resource officers were inside the school at the start of the shooting.
See the statement on the shooting from MNPS below:
Antioch High School is on a lockdown due to shots being fired inside the school building. Metro Police are on the scene. The person responsible for shooting is no longer a threat. We will be gathering students in the auditorium and will provide information on reunification as soon as possible.
This is an active crime scene and investigation. We will work with the MNPD to provide further updates as they become available.
MNPD says they are not sure at this time if this was a targeted incident.
Antioch High School has announced that classes have been canceled for the rest of the week and grief counseling and other resources will be provided.
This is an ongoing investigation.
