Bengals’ 2025 Kickoff: Predicting Wins and Losses for the First Five Games

The Cincinnati Bengals are set to kick off their season with a divisional clash on the road against the Cleveland Browns, launching a campaign filled with high expectations. While predicting an entire NFL season is often a futile exercise, a focused look at the opening stretch of the schedule can provide a clearer picture of a team’s potential. For the Bengals, who have historically needed to overcome slow starts, the first five games will be crucial in setting the tone for their Super Bowl aspirations.

Analyzing the Bengals’ Path Through the First Five Weeks

Week 1: at Cleveland Browns
Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who led the Browns to a playoff appearance in 2023, returns to Cleveland and will test the Bengals’ young and unproven secondary with his powerful arm. However, Cincinnati possesses a decisive advantage at quarterback with Joe Burrow. The Browns’ ability to disrupt the Bengals’ high-flying passing attack could be compromised if star defensive end Myles Garrett is hampered by a hip injury.

Barring adverse weather conditions, Cincinnati’s offense should be able to move the ball effectively. This will likely force Flacco into predictable passing situations, where his aggressive style could lead to critical turnovers. A key defensive play, such as a strip-sack by Trey Hendrickson or a late interception, could seal a hard-fought victory for the Bengals in a game that may be closer than anticipated.
Prediction: Bengals 24, Browns 20

Week 2: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars enter the season with a new offensive identity under head coach Liam Coen, who joins from the Sean McVay coaching tree. The success of his system will hinge on quarterback Trevor Lawrence, whose performance has been inconsistent over the past two seasons. Adjusting to a new scheme could present early challenges for Lawrence, though he is supported by a dynamic wide receiver duo in Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter, as well as a deep backfield featuring Travis Etienne Jr. This collection of talent could pose a significant threat to Cincinnati’s run defense.

Despite Jacksonville’s potential, the Bengals hold the edge in offensive continuity and have superior quarterback play. Facing a rookie head coach making his road debut, Cincinnati should have enough firepower to secure a victory in their home opener.
Prediction: Bengals 34, Jaguars 27

Week 3: at Minnesota Vikings
In a potentially tricky road matchup, the Bengals will benefit from the absence of Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison, who will be serving the final game of a three-game suspension. While containing superstar Justin Jefferson is a formidable task for any defense, his production often comes regardless of the game’s outcome.

Minnesota’s defense, coordinated by Brian Flores, is known for its aggressive schemes, but Cincinnati found success against it last season when backup quarterback Jake Browning threw for 324 yards in a 27-24 overtime win. With Burrow at the helm, the Bengals should be able to exploit a suspect Vikings secondary. Facing rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy in only his third NFL start, Cincinnati is positioned to win a close contest.
Prediction: Bengals 26, Vikings 24

Week 4: at Denver Broncos (Monday Night Football)
A prime-time matchup in Denver presents a significant test. The Broncos are looking for quarterback Bo Nix to make a second-year leap under coach Sean Payton, and their formidable defense could challenge for the AFC West title. Denver’s pass-rushing duo of Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper will present a major challenge for the Bengals’ offensive line.

However, questions remain about Denver’s ability to compete with top-tier AFC teams. Last season, the Broncos were 0-6 against playoff contenders before a Week 18 win over Kansas City’s backups. While home-field advantage will be a factor, Burrow’s proficiency in clutch situations should be the difference. Expect him to orchestrate a game-winning drive, culminating in a decisive field goal by Evan McPherson.
Prediction: Bengals 20, Broncos 17

Week 5: vs. Detroit Lions
The Bengals’ perfect start is projected to end against a tough Detroit Lions team. Coming off a Monday night road game, Cincinnati faces a short week of preparation for Dan Campbell’s physical squad. If the Bengals enter this game undefeated, the pressure and expectations will be immense.

The Lions’ dynamic backfield of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, combined with the game-wrecking ability of defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, poses a multifaceted threat. While Detroit is adjusting to the loss of both its offensive and defensive coordinators, the team will likely be playing with urgency. After facing a string of less-experienced quarterbacks, the Bengals’ defense may be vulnerable against the Lions’ balanced and potent offense. This matchup is expected to be a high-scoring affair, with Detroit handing Cincinnati its first loss of the season.
Prediction: Lions 38, Bengals 31
