The annual Fat Bear Week competition is officially underway, inviting the public to vote for the Alaskan brown bear that has most successfully bulked up for winter hibernation. According to organizers, the goal is to select the bear that “best exemplifies fatness and success in brown bears.”
While the winner earns a coveted spot on the champion’s wall at Katmai National Park, the true prize is the increased chance of survival that a substantial layer of fat provides during the lean winter months.
The field of 12 contenders includes last year’s winner, Grazer, who is back to defend her title after a decisive victory over rival Chunk. Both bears return as early favorites in this year’s competition. In a promising sign for the reigning family, Grazer’s cub, Little Miss Biggie, has already been crowned this year’s Fat Bear Junior champion.
