Belinda Bencic has secured her first singles victory in nearly a month, defeating American Katie Volynets 6-3, 6-3 in her opening match in Beijing.
The Swiss player, ranked 16th in the world, overcame a challenging start in the 91-minute contest. Despite trailing by a break in both sets, she rallied on each occasion to overcome the world number 107.
This tournament marks Bencic’s first appearance since a surprising second-round exit at the US Open. She is now set to face Australia’s Priscilla Hon (WTA 108) in the third round on Sunday.
