Texas Christian University (TCU) has refuted accusations that it canceled a Turning Point USA event featuring de-transitioner Chloe Cole. The university’s statement on Wednesday came after the controversy prompted criticism from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Representative Chip Roy.
In a statement, the university clarified that the event was never officially scheduled. According to a spokesperson, an external party, not affiliated with TCU, invited Cole to speak on campus on October 7. The student chapter of TPUSA then requested that TCU host the event for an expected 700 to 1,000 attendees.
“The requested space was already booked with another student event,” the spokesperson explained. “We explored options and notified the group on Sept. 25 that a secure space was not available given the short notice, but we offered to find another date or space for the event. TCU never canceled this event as it was never booked.”
The initial reports of a cancellation drew sharp responses from Texas officials. Attorney General Paxton commented, “This doesn’t look like free speech to me,” and indicated his office would investigate. Rep. Roy noted that Cole had testified before the House Judiciary Committee and wrote on X, “Expect an inquiry as to why she’s not welcomed by you.”
TCU officials stated they proactively contacted Paxton’s office to “provide accurate information regarding the scheduling conflict” but have not yet received a response.
In a later statement, Roy reiterated his position, saying, “Universities need to get back to the free flow and exchange of ideas. The American people are tired of watching conservative speech be suppressed, no matter the reason. I hope TCU properly accommodates my friend Chloe Cole and the Turning Point USA at TCU chapter to host their event.”
Cole maintained that the university had canceled her appearance. On social media, she accused TCU of obstructing the event, claiming that rooms were available and that when pressed, organizers were told, “this is not open for discussion.” She added, “This is how free speech dies.”
