Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is experiencing a dramatic reversal in his approval ratings, with a new poll showing a sharp decline in support from Democrats and a significant surge in approval from Republicans in his home state.
According to a Quinnipiac University poll, 54% of Pennsylvania Democrats now disapprove of Fetterman’s performance, while only 33% approve. This marks a stark turnaround from the previous year, when 80% of Democrats approved of his work and just 10% disapproved.
Conversely, Republican support for the Democratic senator has soared. The poll found that 62% of GOP voters now approve of his performance, a complete reversal from last year when 75% disapproved and only 16% approved. Opinions among independent voters have remained stable and split over the past year.
This shift in public opinion coincides with several instances where Fetterman, first elected in 2022, has broken from his party’s stance. Since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term, he has occasionally sided with congressional Republicans on key issues.
Most recently, Fetterman voted for a Republican-led measure to temporarily fund the government, criticizing his party’s shutdown strategy. He argued the Democratic approach would politically benefit Trump while “plunging the nation into chaos.”
Despite his bipartisan actions, Fetterman has affirmed he is not switching parties. In a recent interview, he distanced himself from certain political rhetoric, stating, “If you want a Democrat that’s going to call people Nazis or fascists or all these kinds of things … I’m not going to be that guy.”
